To decide to holiday in Bath when you live not ten miles down the road might be regarded as eccentric. But Ingrid Langley and Patrick Gillard, working for SOCA, badly need a break. Patrick is still recovering from being heavily drugged by criminals on his previous case and Ingrid, who would not describe herself as a ‘spring chicken’ is getting over having a baby.
The holiday proceeds sedately enough but then they bump into an old flame of Patrick’s, Alexandra Nightingale, at a ‘Roman experience, togas provided’ party. Alexandra requests Patrick’s help with her property hunt and Ingrid tags along — only to open a cupboard in a dilapidated cottage and make a very gruesome discovery, a decomposing severed head.
